|The Dance of Reality To Be Released On Blu-ray, DVD and Digitally August 25
Posted on Jul 22nd, 2014
After a successful theatrical run earlier this year, The Dance of Reality, the first film in over 23 years by filmmaker Alejandro Jodorowsky’s will be made available by ABKCO Films digitally and on Blu-ray and DVD formats on August 25.
The legendary filmmaker was born in 1929 in Tocopilla, a coastal town on the edge of the Chilean desert, where this film was shot. It was there that Jodorowsky underwent an unhappy and alienated childhood as part of an uprooted family. Blending his personal history with metaphor, mythology and poetry, The Dance of Reality reflects Jodorowsky’s philosophy that reality is not objective but rather a "dance" created by our own imaginations. A. O. Scott of the New York Times called the film “an eccentric and lovely coming-of-age story, an evocation of the lost landscapes and vividly recalled sensations of childhood.” Los Angeles Times’ Robert Abele said the film is “exquisitely attuned to the commingling of the bitterly funny and tragic . . . proof that the legendary provocateur is still a front of out-there invention.”
Jodorowsky first came to international prominence in 1970 when John Lennon championed his “acid western” film El Topo, which was screened on a regular basis at the Elgin Theatre in New York at midnight. The phenomenon earned Jodorowsky the title of “Father of the Midnight Movie.”
Other films, written and directed by Jodorowsky including The Holy Mountain and Fando y Lis, with their focus on surreal imagery and spiritual subject matter, have become cult favorites among generations of underground moviegoers.
Along with the home entertainment release of The Dance of Reality, ABKCO Films is also making available El Topo (Blu-ray, DVD, digital), The Holy Mountain (Blu-ray, DVD, digital), and Fando y Lis (DVD, digital). This is the first time any of these films have been available digitally, and the first time ABKCO Films has offered Fando y Lis independently of The Films of Alejandro Jodorowsky box set.
