50th Anniversary of Sam Cooke's "A Change Is Gonna Come" Single Release

One of the greatest songs of the sixties, "A Change is Gonna Come," was released as a single Christmas week 1964, 50 years ago.

Sam Cooke, the man who wrote and sang the song, had died 11 days earlier.

"A Change is Gonna Come" was immediately embraced by Cooke's grieving fans as an elegy for a great star. But the song came to be about much more than one artist; "A Change is Gonna Come" became an anthem for the civil rights movement in America.

Half a century later, the change is still coming.
