GET YER YA-YA’S OUT!
Albert Maysles, Bradley Kaplan & Ian Markiewicz 1969/2009, USA; 27m
Albert and David Maysles famously documented the Rolling Stones 1969 U.S. tour in Gimme Shelter released in 1970. For Get Yer Ya-Ya’s Out! Albert Maysles put together never-before seen archive footage that shows the band – Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Charlie Watts, Mick Taylor and Bill Wyman – at its apogee, wowing New York audiences at Madison Square Garden over the Thanksgiving weekend (November 26, 27, 28) of 1969. This 2009 released film – presented in surround sound – features brilliantly shot full-length performances of the five previously unreleased Stones songs — “Prodigal Son, “ “You Gotta Move,” “Under My Thumb,” “I’m Free” and “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction.” Beyond the song performances – the film includes a sequence with Mick Jagger, Charlie Watts and Jack the donkey during the cover shoot for the Ya-Ya’s album and backstage tête-à-têtes between Keith Richards, Jimi Hendrix and Mick Taylor. During “Satisfaction” Janis Joplin is seen doing an impromptu boogaloo at the side of the stage. There is also a sequence shot at Olympic Studios in London during a mixing session plus a heliport summit meeting with the Grateful Dead. The film is available in the ABKCO Records November 2009 release: Get Yer Ya-Ya’s Out! The Rolling Stones In Concert – 40th Anniversary Deluxe Box Set and Get Yer Ya-Ya’s Out! The Rolling Stones In Concert – 40th Anniversary Super Deluxe Box Set.

STONES IN EXILE
Stephen Kijak, 2010, USA/UK; 61m
A behind-the-scenes account of the recording of the Rolling Stones’s classic 1972 double album Exile on Main Street. The Stones are in tax exile in the South of France, Keith’s set up house with Anita, and there’s a jerry-rigged recording studio in the basement. It’s all wine, women, and song—plus certain other substances (although Charlie can’t get his hands on any PG Tips). A collage of voiceover reminiscences by the band and many bystanders, vintage super-8 footage, and hundreds of iconic photographs make this a treasure trove for fans.
PERFORMANCE
Donald Cammell & Nicolas Roeg, 1970, UK; 105m
Hiding out in a Notting Hill mansion, a vicious East End gangster (James Fox) on the run gets his mind forcibly expanded by Mick Jagger in Cammell and Roeg’s audaciously edited loop-de-loop through consciousness and sexual panic. With Anita Pallenberg in furs, shrooms, a Jagger music video, and the floating head of Jorge Luis Borges.
